Even having just one missing tooth can make life challenging—not only is your ability to bite, chew, and speak impacted, but needless to say, your confidence and self-image will suffer. This is why it’s always worthwhile to replace your missing teeth. However, some patients are tempted by the various do-it-yourself tooth replacement options that are out there. But are these DIY alternatives as safe and reliable as what your dentist can provide? Here’s what you need to know.

DIY Replacements Aren’t Better

Some DIY solutions and store-bought kits might seem innovative or likely to work, but don’t be fooled; these options are subpar and won’t provide you with the beautiful, functional results you’re probably hoping for. Here’s a closer look at some of the products that you should avoid:

·        Melted polymers – These come in the form of polymer beads, which is a type of plastic. The beads can be melted and molded into the shape of a tooth, and coloring agents can be added.

·        Moldable waxes– These work similarly to polymer products, but they’re ready to be shaped without needing to be melted. However, moldable pastes are mainly used for teeth with chips and cracks and aren’t meant to substitute a whole tooth.

·        Orthodontic wax – This is intended to keep braces from poking and prodding soft oral tissues inside of the mouth, but some people use a tooth-sized chunk to fill a gap where a tooth once was. Needless to say, it’s not a lasting solution.

Trust Your Dentist Instead

As tempting as it might be to save money on dental work and opt for some of these DIY options, the simple truth is they absolutely pale in comparison to the solutions that your dentist can provide. Simply put, these options will never look as natural or beautiful as the crowns, dentures, or bridges offered by a professional. When it comes to replacing missing teeth, dentists know best, and they can customize these restorations as much as necessary to ensure that they serve you well for many years to come. Plus, if there’s ever an issue, you’ll know exactly who to contact!

Dentists and professionals around the world agree that you shouldn’t try to fix or replace your teeth on their own—it’s simply not going to end well, and more than likely, will cost you even more money down the road!
